The Main character’s given name is Craig Ogden Plummer. His artist’s nom de guerre is DeBris. As a goof, he tells Nina Brown (the nanny) when he first meets her that his name is Bo Danker (a homonym of ‘Boat Anchor’; Read the Free Sample Chapters to find out exactly how this went down). The nickname Bear, was given to him by his first wife, Carol (now deceased) due to his size. Craig Plummer is therefore referred to as the artist, the contractor, the builder, the carpenter, and on occasion Bear.
The nanny has changed her first name to Nina as a result of her high school classmates mercilessly taunting her with her original name due a mysterious incident that she cannot recall. Being a late chapter plot point it is not inappropriate to reveal her given name here. The nanny has, as well, assumed her mother’s maiden name due to a falling out with her father, and at the story’s opening goes by the name Nina Brown.
Nina gives the man she knows as Bo Danker many endearments, which are not always entirely endearing. Bo Danker struggles to give Nina as good as he gets, but is no match for her wit in this regard. Nina possess a seemingly endless array of epithets used as sobriquets or put downs depending on her mood. These will be discussed in another post.
Due to a speech impediment (that does not allow voiced velor plosives), the nine year old autistic boy, Craig Kohl, pronounces his name as Rake. Craig Plummer duley dubs the child, Rake, which the young boy adopts. In a scene cut from the final draft, Rake tells his mother, “Stop calling me ‘Rake, my name is Rake.” Implying that the boy hears the difference, despite the fact that he cannot pronounce the difference. Due to the ten year old’s stunted growth, Craig Plummer, often refers to the boy as The Little Guy or The Little Marmot, among other heartfelt endearments.
